Q: How can I ‘surrender’ to God (higher self, the Universe) and still be myself?

There is no need to surrender. There is no one and nothing to surrender to.
Trust is the key to your process.
Trust in that place within yourself where your true Self resides. It is not a real physical place but since you live in time and space it might be easier to use those words.
Trust in the process in which you can develop a way of acting and thinking that comes from that inner place and not from the thoughts and emotions of your mind.
Trust that everything works out just the way it is supposed to be and that you need do little to help it along.
Allow thoughts, ideas and actions to come to you rather than making a large effort. These are the ways that trust in your true Self develops and grows until it is the only way you think, feel and act.
